Common Mistakes to Avoid

Many application issues can be prevented by being aware of the most common mistakes that applicants make. Review the list below before starting your application to give yourself the best chance of a smooth experience:

Incorrect Passport Number

One of the most common errors is entering your passport number incorrectly. Always cross-reference every character of your passport number directly from your physical passport. Even a single digit or letter error can cause processing delays or result in your ETA being linked to incorrect information.

Name Spelling Errors

Your name must be entered exactly as it appears on the biographical page of your passport, including any middle names, hyphens, or special characters. Do not abbreviate or use nicknames. If your passport uses accented characters, try to replicate these as closely as possible.

Expired or Nearly Expired Passport

Your passport must have at least six months of remaining validity from your intended date of arrival in the UK. If your passport will expire within this window, you should renew it before applying for your ETA. Applying with an insufficient passport validity will result in issues.

Wrong Email Address

All application communications, status updates, and decisions are sent to the email address you provide during application. A typo in your email means you will not receive important updates. Double-check your email address before submitting.

Applying Too Late

While many ETA applications are processed quickly, processing times are not guaranteed. Applying at the last minute before your travel date leaves no margin for delays, additional information requests, or unexpected processing times. We recommend applying well in advance.

Inconsistent Information

Ensure that the information you provide is consistent throughout the application. For example, your date of birth, nationality, and name should be the same in every section where they are requested. Inconsistencies may trigger additional review.

Ignoring Additional Information Requests

If the processing authorities request additional information or documentation, respond promptly and thoroughly. Delayed responses to these requests can significantly extend your processing time and may ultimately affect the outcome of your application.
