Frequently Asked Questions
Comprehensive answers to the most common questions about UK ETA applications, eligibility, processing, and our service.
What is a UK ETA?
The UK Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital pre-travel permission required for nationals of specific countries who wish to visit the United Kingdom for short-term purposes. The ETA is part of the UK Government's Universal Permission to Travel scheme, which aims to ensure that all non-British and non-Irish nationals have authorisation before entering the country. The ETA is electronically linked to your passport and must be obtained before you travel. It is not a visa and does not grant permission to work, study, or settle in the UK.
Who needs a UK ETA?
Currently, nationals of Gulf Cooperation Council countries (Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE), Jordan, and a growing number of other countries are required to obtain a UK ETA before travelling. The programme is being implemented in phases and is expected to expand to include additional nationalities. British and Irish citizens do not need an ETA, nor do holders of valid UK visas or those with settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme. If you are unsure whether you need an ETA, visit our Verify Eligibility page for detailed information.
How long is a UK ETA valid?
A UK ETA is typically valid for a period of two years from the date of issue, allowing multiple entries to the United Kingdom during that time. Each individual visit is generally limited to a maximum stay of 186 days. The ETA is linked to your specific passport, so if you obtain a new passport during the validity period, you will need to apply for a new ETA linked to your new travel document. The exact validity period is determined by the UK Government and may be subject to change.
What documents do I need to apply for a UK ETA?
To apply for a UK ETA, you will need a valid passport from an eligible country with at least six months of remaining validity, a valid email address for communications and updates, your personal details (name, date of birth, place of birth) as they appear in your passport, information about your planned travel dates and purpose of visit, and your accommodation details in the UK if available. Having all of these ready before starting the application helps ensure a smooth and efficient process.
Can I apply for a UK ETA through ETA UK CENTER?
Yes. ETA UK CENTER provides application assistance for the UK ETA. We guide you through the application form with structured step-by-step instructions, provide document preparation guidance, and offer email-based support throughout the process. Please note that we are a private third-party service and are not affiliated with the UK Government or GOV.UK. Our service is optional — the UK ETA can also be applied for directly through official government channels.
How much does it cost to apply?
There are two separate fee components when applying through our service: the government processing fee (set by UK authorities and applicable regardless of how you apply) and our service assistance fee (which covers our application guidance, form support, and customer service). The exact amounts for both fees are clearly displayed during the application process at the payment stage. We believe in full fee transparency — there are no hidden charges. For more information about our fee structure, visit our Pricing page.
How long does UK ETA processing take?
Processing times are determined by the UK Government and may vary depending on application volume, the completeness of the information provided, and whether additional security checks are required. While many applications receive a decision within a few working days, some may take longer. We strongly recommend applying well in advance of your intended travel date to allow sufficient time for processing. We cannot influence or accelerate the processing of any application.
Can I modify my application after submitting it?
Modifications may be possible depending on the current processing status of your application. Minor corrections (such as fixing a spelling error) can sometimes be made through your account or by contacting our support team. More significant changes (such as updating passport details) may require a new application. The earlier you identify and request a correction, the better the chances of it being accommodated. Visit our Update Details page for full information about the modification process.
Can I withdraw my application?
Withdrawal may be possible depending on the processing stage of your application. If your application has not yet entered active processing, withdrawal is generally straightforward. Once processing has begun, options may be more limited. Contact our support team to discuss your withdrawal request. Refund eligibility for withdrawn applications is determined separately based on our Refund Terms. Withdrawing an application does not prevent you from applying again in the future.
Is ETA UK CENTER affiliated with the UK Government?
No. ETA UK CENTER is a private third-party service providing assistance with UK ETA applications. We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the UK Government, GOV.UK, the Home Office, UK Visas and Immigration, or any other official government body. We provide application guidance and support as a commercial service. The UK ETA can also be applied for directly through official government channels.
What if my ETA application is not approved?
If your UK ETA application is not approved, you will receive notification of the decision along with information about the reasons. Our support team can assist with enquiries about your application status and potential next steps. It is important to understand that we cannot influence approval decisions — these are made solely by the UK Government authorities. If your application is refused, you may have the option to apply for a standard UK visa depending on your circumstances and travel purpose.
Do I need to print my UK ETA?
No. The UK ETA is linked electronically to your passport. There is no physical document, card, or sticker to print or carry. When you arrive at a UK port of entry, border officials will verify your ETA status using your passport details through their electronic systems. You do not need to show any printout or confirmation — simply presenting your passport is sufficient. However, we recommend keeping your confirmation email and reference number accessible for your records.
Can I apply on behalf of family members?
Yes. You can submit UK ETA applications on behalf of family members, including children and other dependants. Each person requires their own individual ETA linked to their own passport. Our application form allows you to add multiple travellers to a single submission for convenience. When applying on behalf of others, ensure you have their passport details and personal information available and that all details are entered accurately.
What happens if my passport expires after my ETA is approved?
Since the UK ETA is linked to a specific passport, if your passport expires or you obtain a new passport for any reason, your existing ETA will no longer be valid for travel. You will need to submit a new ETA application using your new passport details. The old ETA cannot be transferred to a new passport. We recommend checking your passport validity before applying for an ETA and timing your application accordingly.
Can I use my UK ETA for work or study?
No. The UK ETA is designed for short-term visits only, including tourism, business meetings, transit, and family visits. It does not grant permission to take up employment, start a business, or enrol in a course of study lasting more than 30 days. If you intend to work, study, or settle in the UK, you will need to apply for the appropriate visa through the UK's immigration system. Using an ETA for purposes it does not cover may result in refusal of entry and future travel restrictions.
